“This summer, we’re going further. We’re adding new categories of services to make every part of your trip easier, and new experiences you can only find on Airbnb—including exclusive access to the FIFA World Cup 2026. We’re also bringing boutique and independent hotels to Airbnb. And we’re upgrading the app with AI-powered tools to help you find the perfect place to stay, plan your trip, and get help the moment you need it.” - Airbnb 2026 Summer Release, May 20th, 2026

Airbnb is attractive as an investment because of its wide moat and optionality. This optionality comes in two forms: products and monetization. We are in the early stages of a constellation of services getting built around the powerhouse lodging platform, as well as the steady pulling of levers to monetize both sides of the travel marketplace.

Founder Brian Chesky is well aware of Airbnb’s potential and has pushed a sense of urgency in product development, leading to a short-term boost in expenses. At the same time, the core business remains a cash machine, enabling an aggressive stock repurchase program. Since peaking in Q3 2023, shares outstanding have fallen at a 2.5% annual clip.

The first quarter of 2026 showed the flowers of this strategy starting to bloom. More growth in nights and experiences booked, more product depth, and a further reduction in total shares outstanding.
